What is Beta Alanine?
Beta Alanine is high quality amino acid linked with a number of performance benefits. Beta Alanine is the building block of carnosine, which plays a vital role in buffering acid in muscles, enabling an increased training intensity. As we know, training at a higher intensity can help to increase lean muscle mass. As one of the most comprehensively researched performance boosting supplements available on the market today, Beta Alanine is a great addition to any athlete or training enthusiast's supplement plan.
How does Beta Alanine work?
In the body beta alanine combines with l-histidine to form carnosine. Carnosine is responsible for buffering acid in the muscles, and in particularly lactic acid which is produced as a byproduct of intense exercise. Daily supplementation with Beta Alanine has been shown to enable the body to perform at a higher intensity for longer and tolerate higher concentrations of lactic acid, thereby enhancing performance (Trexler 2015). Furthermore carnosine has been shown to have antioxidant properties and can reduce free-radical activity (Klebanov 1998). Free Radicals are another byproduct of intense training that can cause cell damage if unattended. Beta alanine is well researched as a supplement and anecdotally many people report being able to perform extra reps when training in sets of 8-15 repetitions.
How will Beta Alanine benefit my training?
In buffering lactic acid beta alanine reduces muscle fatigue during explosive exercise, allowing for extra work to be done, and boosting lean muscle gains. Beta alanine has also been shown to boost moderate to high-intensity cardiovascular performance between 1 and 4 minutes (Trexler), making it an ideal supplement for sports such as rowing or middle distance running.
How should I use Beta Alanine?
We recommend a dose 5g of Beta Alanine per day, taken with your pre or post-workout shake. On non-training days take 5g at approximately the same time of day. Beta Alanine is perfectly safe to use with other supplements. In fact, Beta Alanine is a common ingredient in pre-workout formulas. Beta alanine can cause skin tingling (paresthesia). This is perfectly normal. Many people find this tingling odd but it is not unsafe and will soon clear. To reduce tingling we recommend splitting your serving throughout the day.
